11-U STARS WIN NATIONAL BID!
The 11-u Stars finish their fall season with a bang,bringing home the silver medal in the EAST COAST CLASH OF CHAMPIONS in Myrtle Beach,SC Dec.2-4.The Stars 2nd place finish gives them an automatic bid to the 11-u USSSA World Series next spring.
The Stars began pool play against the #1 team from NC as they defeated the Carolina Big Dogs 2-1 in the Friday night opener.This game was highlighted by good defence by both teams.With the stars holding a 2-1 lead, the Big Dogs threatened to tie the game in the 5th when lead-off batter gets on and is bunted to 2nd, then goes to 3rd on a wild pitch.With 2 outs the Dogs pull a gutsy move by trying to steal home on the pitch by Beck.Catcher Williams applies the tag to end the threat.Great defence by the Stars in the 6th again hold the Dogs scoreless.After the Dogs 1st 2 batters get on base,Beck strikes out the next batter for out #1.The next batter hits a fly ball to center fielder Trey Wells who guns the ball home to prevent the runner on 3rd from scoring.The last batter grounds out to 2nd baseman Dillon Hodges to give the Stars the win.Spencer Ramsey gets the Stars only hit while Brennen Beck gets an rbi bunt to score Ramsey and David Williams scores the only other run when Chase Roupp hits a ball that is errored by the 2nd baseman.Ashton Love records the win while Beck gets the save. Game#2 pits the Stars against the Florence Insanity with the Stars taking a 11-4 win.The Stars get the bats going with 9 hits and 9 earned runs.David Williams picks up the win with Jeremy Johnson pitching in relief.Hitting was lead by Trey Wells going 3-3,2R,3rbi,Bradley Jackson 2-3,1rbi;David Williams 1-2,2r,1rbi;Jeremy Johnson 1-3,1r,1rbi;Spencer Ramsey 1-3,1r,1rbi;Ashton Love 1r,1rbi;Chase Roupp 1-1,1r,1rbi. The Stars go undefeated in pool play by winning their next game against the Cape Fear Pirates 9-1 in 4 innings.Jeremy Johnson goes the distance picking up the win.Hitting was lead by Trey Wells 2-2,2r,1rbi;David Williams 1-2,2r,2rbi;Bradley Jackson 1-2,1r,1rbi;Ashton Love 1-2,1rbi;Jeremy Johnson 1r,1rbi;Dylon Hodges 2r;Spencer Ramsey 1rbi,Stephen Thompson 1r. The Championship game found the Stars again playing The Carolina Big Dogs.With Ashton Love pitching for the Stars,we found ourselves in a pitching and defensive duel with the score 0-0 after 3 innings.The dogs got on the board 1st when their lead-off batter hits a single followed by a home run.The Dogs take a 3-0 lead after the inning.The Stars challenged in the top of the 5th with Ramsey and Jackson drawing walks,and Love getting on by error to load the bases.Beck and Roupp follow with rbi singles and Pittman bunting in the go-ahead run to give the stars a 4-3 lead.The Dogs come back in the 5th with lead-off batter drawing a walk.With 2 outs and the Stars leading, the next 2 batters single followed by an error and another single and a walk to pick up 3 runs and a 6-4 lead.However, the Stars gave one last effort as Wells gets on by error followed by walks from Williams,Ramsey, and Jackson to score one more run.With the bases loaded the Stars could not get another run before the final out, leaving the Stars to take 2nd place.Leading batters were Brennen Beck 1-3,1r,1rbi;Chase Roupp 1-2,2rbi;Taz Pittman 1rbi;Trey Wells 1r;Spencer Ramsey 1r;Bradley Jackson 1r,1rbi;Ashton Love 1r. The Stars out-scored their opponents 27-12 and recorded 36 stolen bases and 22 RBI for the tournament. WAY TO GO STARS!
